PrEP rant

Okay, so I’ve been looking into getting on PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and I’ve been absolutely shocked at the animosity towards this new scientific breakthrough on both sides of the poz-neg line. So, I thought I’d take a tumblr rant to explain why this drug needs to be more commonplace and more accepted. Here are a few bullet point

  1. PrEP isn’t a replacement for condoms and people using it should know this. I would not expect a doctor to give this med to anyone thinking it is full-on 100% a replacement for condoms. Although PrEP works against HIV with STUNNING effectiveness (99% effective if taken as directed and still very effective if taken less regularly), there’s still a chance (however small) it doesn’t work, and it doesn’t protect from the myriad of other nasties, some of which can be a fate worse than HIV if not treated properly (syphilis) . However, most people on this drug will be aware of this, and, as such, should likely use protection most of the time. That being said, this leads us to point number 2 which is that:
  2. Asking for someone to use something that makes sex less enjoyable 100% of the time is just as irresponsible as anything a well-informed, knowledgable, and responsible user of PrEP would do. As amazing as condoms are, they have a fatal flaw in that they are a literal barrier between two people in what is supposed to be an intimate act. Condoms make sex less enjoyable for both partners, so there will be times, like it or not, where they’re not used. In these instances, it’s better to have the safety net of PrEP than nothing. On top of that, not all of these times will be intentional or consensual because of point 3:
  3. Shit happens. Even if you do use a condom 100% of the time, you are still at risk. Condoms are not perfect, and can and have failed. Even worse, there are still people out there who will stealthily remove a condom while fucking or deliberately make a condom fail in order to infect the other person. Though most of the HIV+ gay community is smart, well-informed, open, honest, and safe in their practices and message, there are still people out there who are not. While a little bit of talking can clear out these crazies, they are still a risk, and I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have something that protects me from HIV than be at mercy to the virus.
  4. You’re probably saying to yourself after point 3 “well what if PrEP fails and you end up infected anyways? If you get infected while on PrEP, the virus can build up a resistance to the drug, which is part of a lot of the chemical cocktails used to fight the virus in humans.” To which I say, true, but, to counter There is a backup plan for this backup plan. If you’re on PrEP, you get a test for HIV every 3 months, along with other tests to make sure that the drug isn’t causing any serious harm to your body. If caught early, an HIV infection in a person using PrEP won’t have time to build up sufficient resistance to the drug, and therefore it can still be used. (I would like to point out the “what if you get infected?” argument was first used on me by a guy who later said “You could just bite the bullet and join the brotherhood.” so, keep that in mind).

In conclusion, I would just like to say that saying that condoms are the only responsible way to fight the virus is illogical, unrealistic, and downright irresponsible, as proven by the prevalence of HIV today, and PrEP, along with regular use of condoms, is a much more effective strategy. HIV caused one of the most horrific and lethal pandemics of the 20th century, there is still no cure, and the virus is still spreading. The condom-only plan has failed, and we need to start pulling out the big guns for this fight before the situation gets even worse. So, if you’re at a high risk of getting HIV (basically the majority of readers of my blog), I would encourage you to talk to your doctor about getting on PrEP as part of your sex life. It could very well save your life.

Anonymous asked: I was just on your blog and like a week ago someone said you're anti-sj. if you're anti-sj, what are you pro? (this is a legitimate question).

Anti-sj is kind of a term that sounds more extreme than it is and probably also doesn’t cover what most anti-sj blogs or people that agree with it are about.

We’re not anti social justice, or against help and equality or anything like that. We’re anti the aggressive counterproductive “pseudo helping” attitude that sometimes runs rampant on tumblr under the guise of social justice. It just became kind of easy to call the people against that anti-sj and most blogs ran with it.

So for the record, I’m not against social justice itself, I’m against the toxic and stupid tumblr brand. Let’s see if I can find a few examples real quick.

Or that time that people running a blog all about how white people food is shit and stupid accidentally made fun of asian food on there and quickly apologized because you can’t insult asian food it was only garbage if it was white.

Or that time death treats were sent towards a innocent tumblr blogger who posted a photo of herself in a kimono because she was “culturally appropriating” despite if being a gift from her host family abroad.

Or that time that there was a news report about the death of a white 9 year old boy over racial bullying and people responded with “cry more white tears”

Or every single time when someone claims to be offended and it’s used as a excuse to bully or threaten everyone who opposes them. And then saying that you are silencing and tone policing if people object to hostile bullying behavior.

Or absolutely annihilating anyone over something offensive they’ve said in the past and deeming people problematic and trash because god nobody ever makes a mistake or says something wrong ever in their lives, right?

Basically the toxic attitude that isn’t helping anyone and has driven people away from good causes. No room for debate, questioning things isn’t allowed. Hiding behind social justice as a shield of immunity in general and abusing that. Seeking problems behind everything and using it as an excuse for abuse, aggression, restricting and bullying.

That is what I am against.
